TRAILER TALK
When you travel by trailer, the trailer itself becomes a big part of the adventure. Sometimes it’s the hero, and, sometimes, it feels like the villian! Usually it’s a big part of the fun. Sometimes it a big pain in the butt. Either way, we plan to use this page to talk about Big Willy. We might share things we learn, changes we make, or just fun (or bad) things that happen along the way. We hope you find it interesting.
Mod #1: Dinette, Banquette w/ Storage
When you have a designer in the family, you never run out of ideas or opportunities! Christina got busy redesigning Big Willy before we even got him home from New Mexico. John kept arguing that we should (a) get him purchased and home, and (b) maybe use him once or twice before we started switching things up. I will let you guess who won that argument.
Our first remodel (of what could be many), was the dinette. The standard solution in the 2022 Globetrotter was a two-part table with a bench on either side. You had to latch the two halves of the table together and there were two supporting posts. The halves of the table didn’t align well and the table itself wasn’t very stable. The legs weren’t adjustable, and so if we wanted to convert the dinette area to a seating lounge or bed, we had to remove the legs and store them somewhere. We also thought a u-shaped bench would allow us to accommodate a third person at the table while also providing some additional storage. We decided we would make some modifications.
We started researching and discovered Airstream had redesigned the table for the 2024 model year. We liked the direction they had gone, so we reached out to Airstream for pricing. Yikes! ($$$$) We quickly decided to go a different direction! We found a hydraulic table pedestal which would allow us to easily adjust the table height, and allowed for side to side and front to back adjustments. Here is a link if you are interested. For the top, we wanted one solid surface that was large enough for dinner or working. So, we had to make a new table top to meet our needs. We also had to fabricate a third bench to create the u-shape we were after. Below, we have included some before and after images, as well as a step-by-step of what we did.
BEFORE
AFTER
We started by installing the new table pedestal to get our spacing right.

We removed the fronts from existing drawers and replaced them with new end pieces.

We made some adjustments to the existing trim pieces to ensure everything would align correctly.

We added ledger boards to support the new seat/top.

We cut down one of the existing table tops to make the front of the new bench match the existing finishes.

We ended up with a nice new storage space.

We added a folding top to serve as both seat and lid for the storage compartment.

Here's how the construction came together.

We made the new top out of white oak.

Picture of the new top installed. We love it!
Be careful or you will lose an “I”!
Sound advice for both children and Airstream owners. While getting Big Willy ready for our mid-Atlantic trip, we did, in fact, lose an I at the car wash. Fortunately, we found it and were able to put it back in its proper place!
The missing letter did make us wonder whether we should rename Big Willy to something pirate-inspired, since it appeared we were now towing and
Arrrrr-stream!
